How can we approach his parents about contributing?

Q:        My future in – laws are traditional and think that my parents should foot all the wedding bills, which they can’t. How can we approach his parents about contributing?

A:       Your fiancé needs to have a discussion with them -without you – during which he should be up front about your family’s finances. He should also be prepared with a breakdown of costs and thoughts about what his parents might contribute. If they decline any financial involvement, he should be gracious and understanding. Your next step??? Scaling down your wedding to what you can afford, whether that’s a lunch for 35 of your closest family and friends, or a potluck party in your backyard. You’ve already won the lottery by finding love. If one day you win the money lottery, then by all means, throw yourselves a big anniversary party.
