Movie: “Bridesmaids”

As many former brides and brides-to-be know: wedding planning is no walk in the park. It is the biggest day of a girl’s life, and the pressure is on for everything to be perfect. We’ve all seen the Bridezillas on TV, and some of us have seen them in real life as well.

What we don’t see as often, is the perspective of a wedding from one of its biggest players, bar the bride and groom- the Maid of Honor. Presumably the bride’s best friend and confidante, her duties can include anything from helping pick out the dress to keeping the bride from getting running away, or losing her mind on that special day! It’s a very important, sometimes difficult job.

This May, the comedy Bridesmaids showcases the wedding from the viewpoint of the Maid of Honor, or our very own “Bridesmaid-zilla.” The story is of Annie: a sort of single, broke, thirty-something year old who is the maid of honor for her recently engaged best friend Lillian. Lillian has been her best friend since childhood, and even though their lives seem to be going in different directions, they still have a tight bond. Annie has a team of bridesmaids, all interesting characters in their own right. Helen, one of the bridesmaids, is a complete contrast to Annie:  married, rich and so well put together. She’s also in competition with Annie for her best friend’s affection. For every plan Annie makes, Helen one-ups her.

Annie, who, it seems, has lost everything, will not allow this shiny newcomer to steal her friend. A hilarious power struggle ensues. As Annie fights for this last victory, her life falls in shambles around her and as she hits rock bottom- we hope to see her rise up above it all.

A hilarious comedy that has received thumbs up around the nation, this movie is really more than another chick flick. We see a woman down on her luck in every aspect of her life, we see the struggle she goes through trying to collect and put the pieces back together. Watching, we can share in her frustrations, despair and tentative steps to repair the broken relations in her life.

One definitely doesn’t need to be in a wedding to enjoy, and learn from the story this film offers.
